Paca House Baltimore, Maryland

Paca House was conceived as a community housing outreach program to provide 106 housing units. The mix included 76 SRO (single-room occupancy units) units and 31 apartments for independent elderly. The project totaled 50,000 square feet at a construction cost of 5.5 million dollars. The challenge was to renovate a turn-of-the-century firehouse and cast-iron-fronted warehouse while adding an infill addition of new construction. The infill section had to link two very different types of historic structures and be compatible and unifying at the same time. A new steel trellis was used along the street wall to bring the project together and link all three elements.
