Barr-Buchanan Center St. Johns College Annapolis, Maryland

The Barr-Buchanan Center at St. John's College represents the extensive renovation of the historic Woodward Library, built circa 1890 and renovated in the 1960s. The new center houses the college's Graduate Institute, offices and support services. The main focus of the design was to use interior glass to bring as much daylight as possible into the building, and to use custom wood accent walls in strategic locations to create a special sense of place. The overall proportions of the new interiors are based on the old, yet the details convey a thoroughly modern sensibility.
